That’s why we’re hosting this FREE online workshop on working with experiences of domestic abuse, so you can master the research-backed DAC model that will equip you with the skills you need to provide this client group with the support, guidance and healing they deserve. You’ll join domestic abuse counselling specialist and trainer Jeannette Roddy, PhD for step-by-step guidance on identifying domestic abuse when the client can't see it for themselves and get detailed skills instructions and start-to-finish guidance on how to adapt your approach when working with this client group.

Dr Jeannette Roddy is a qualified counsellor and Senior Lecturer at the University of Salford, where she is Programme Leader of the MSc Counselling and Psychotherapy (Professional Training). She has been involved in counselling research with victims of domestic abuse for the last 10 years and is the author of Counselling and Psychotherapy After Domestic Violence: A client view of what helps recovery. In October last year, she led the opening of a counselling service for people who have experienced domestic abuse in the Counselling Centre at the University of Salford. Ten trainee and qualified counsellors are working in the service after receiving in-depth training based on the Competency Framework for Domestic Violence Counselling, published with Professor Lynne Gabriel in 2019, developed from her research. Clients can self-refer into the service using the online referral form.


Objectives

  1. Identify client experiences of domestic abuse from clients who are unaware that they are being abused.  
  2. Recognize the mental health symptoms resulting from being in an abusive relationship and understand how and why they have developed.  
  3. Create a therapeutic space which reduces the number of cancelled or ‘did not attend’ appointments.  
  4. Track your client’s progress in therapy and adjust your practice to meet their needs.  
  5. Use specific skills which are key for counselling this client group.  
  6. Work with a wide range of domestic abuse client experiences, independent of the gender, sexuality of other characteristics.
