How to make use of the interaction between therapist and client?
Which parts of ourselves, and our clients, do we attend to in any given clinical moment?
How do we reveal ourselves without intruding? What can a focus on the here-and-now interactions do to deepen intimacy in a treatment, and lead to a more complex understanding of both the client and the dyad?
In this workshop, participants will learn about contemporary relational psychoanalytic theory, how it both converges and diverges with classical drive models and how it fits with other evolving fields such as neuro-science, affect regulation, attachment and trauma focused modalities.
By the end of the workshop you will:
- Learn how to describe the origins of Relational theory.
- Be able to identify contributing theorists to Relational theory.
- Be able to identify key concepts in Relational theory.
- Learn how to relate key Relational concepts to their own clinical work.
This one-day training will introduce participants to the fundamental concepts of Relational theory. Participants will learn about the evolution of the theory, incorporating aspects of British Object Relations, Self-Psychology, Interpersonal and Intersubjective theories, along with Feminist, Queer, and Race Studies. Learning methods will include didactic lecture, role play, large and small group discussion, and live supervision. Participants are invited to bring case material to share.
Meghan Kelley, LCSW-R is a licensed clinical social worker and Relational psychoanalyst. She holds a Master of Social Work from the State University of New York at Albany and a four-year Certification in Psychoanalysis from the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy. Meghan served as a member of ICP’s four-year Psychoanalytic Training Program training committee, and was active in the Institute’s Trauma, Family and Couples, and Gender and Sexuality divisions. She was a faculty member of the Institute for Expressive Analysis, and a guest lecturer at New York University Silver School of Social Work. After maintaining a private psychotherapy and supervision practice in New York for nearly 20 years, Meghan moved to London in September 2019 to assume the role of Global Wellness Counsellor at NYU’s Study Away site in London. She is certified in Dialectic Behavioural Therapy, Maternal Mental Health, and Social Work Field Instruction, and is registered with Social Work England.
Teresa Finlay is a UKCP accredited Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist and Mentalization Based Practitioner. Teresa spent many years working in a therapeutic community model under the supervision of relational psychoanalysts and has always had a strong interest in this field of psychoanalytic theory. Teresa was a member of the counselling service at the University of Sussex for several years and has facilitated and delivered workshops, lectures, and clinical presentations at CPD events for trainee and qualified counsellors and psychotherapists. Teresa is now a senior accredited psychotherapist and clinical supervisor with The Therapy Clinic in Brighton.
Teresa is a member of the Relational School and the International Association of Relational Psychoanalysis and has continued her passion for this subject by taking on further study in interpersonal and relational thinkers through the William Allenson White Institute in New York.
This workshop is suitable for qualified and training psychotherapists and counsellors. Primarily post-qualified psychodynamic counsellors and psychotherapists and psychoanalytic psychotherapists who are interested in learning more about relational psychoanalysis. This may also be of interest to person centred and humanistic therapists.
