We are looking for experienced Cognitive Behavioural Therapists or Counsellors to help students as they cope with adverse life experiences or mental health problems. You will work within Student Services’ Matching Care model, delivering the lightest evidence-based interventions to promote student’s autonomy, resilience and independence. Meetings with students are primarily face to face and by telephone. As a Student Services team member, you will work in a collaborative and responsive manner. You will play a key role in supporting the University’s response to critical student incidents where mental health may be a contributory factor.
Student Services provides a comprehensive welfare and support service for all matriculated students, which includes:
- Immigration, Disability, Finance, and Academic advice.
- Pastoral support in halls of residence through the Warden Service
- Out of Hours support
- The main information service to the students from the ASC (The Advice and Support Centre).
- Wellbeing, Coaching, Counselling, CBT and Mental Health coordination, working within a Matching Care model.
We aim to deliver sector-leading services and have recently secured accreditation with APPTS (Accreditation Programme of Psychological Therapies Services, Quality Standards Team at the Royal College of Psychiatrists in partnership with the British Psychological Society) for our work in Wellbeing, Counselling and Mental Health.
The purpose of this role is to support the University in meeting the needs of students coping with adverse life experiences or experiencing mental health problems. This will involve working within Student Services Matching Care model, delivering evidence based interventions and assisting students in a manner that promotes their autonomy, resilience and independence. Meetings with students are primarily face to face, but also by telephone/email. The role holder works as a member of the Student Services team in a flexible, collaborative and responsive manner.
The Cognitive Behavioural Therapist or Counsellor will be educated to degree level or equivalent, and will have relevant professional qualifications and experience of working with adults and/or young people with mental health difficulties. The successful candidate will be accredited by a recognised CBT or counselling professional body or will be working towards accreditation. Experience of working within a further or higher education setting is desirable and knowledge of relevant legislation relating to mental health and disability is essential.
The post-holder will have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be able to deliver training, and will be able to work independently and as part of the wider Student Services team. Additionally, they will liaise with academic schools and the wider University as required and will work with external agencies (such as General Practitioners, Community Mental Health Teams and third sector) to ensure a collaborative and holistic approach.
The successful applicant will play a key role in supporting the University’s response to critical student incidents where mental health may be a contributory factor. They will also be responsible for working within existing policies and assisting in drafting new policies and resources, as appropriate in support of students with mental health difficulties. A flexible approach, including working extended hours as required, is necessary for this role.
