In the turbulent times in which we live, the pace of technological advancements is continuously increas- ing and its reach into our personal and collective lives is becoming increasingly invasive. Whether it is the fear of a nuclear event, or the terrible warning signs of climate crises, or the threats to privacy and iden- tity, or the loss of a sense of place and community as we live more and more in digital space, or the shadowy impacts of technology on our political and economic institutions, or the seemingly insane pace of time in a 24/7 wired world, we are webbed into a way of being where these global concerns are the very fabric of our day to day lives.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is a parable for our time, and Robert’s upcoming book, Victor Frankenstein, the Monster and the Shadows of Technology: The Frankenstein Prophecies poses eight questions ad- dressed to us by the Monster, who, never named and abandoned by his creator, is exiled to the margins of mind where he haunts the collective imagination.

In this one-day event, focusing on the therapy room where the Monster’s descendants, whose voices have been silenced and whose stories are still un-told, now appear in symptomatic disguises, we will dis- cuss how the Monster’s tale has specific implications for reframing psychotherapy as a cultural therapy. Together we will use case examples to explore the necessity to recover the wisdom of the dream, to cre- ate an ethics on the margins, to examine the complexities of love and its dark shadows, to be responsive to the dire warnings about climate change by facing how we create monster by denying responsibility for our own actions, and to acknowledge the healing power of grief once we face the very real possibility that we might be living in end times.

Copies of Victor Frankenstein, the Monster and the Shadows of Technology: The Frankenstein Prophecies will be available for sale on the day prior to its official publication.
